Pee Totaler – Pee Recycling?

A couple of months ago three astronauts gave a toast for a new drink on the International Space Station. If you saw TV or read the paper you know their new drink they were toasting with was – oh my gosh! Pee or the more refined term urine. Have you ever heard of pee recycling?

On May 20, three astronauts held up silver pouches to toast a new beverage available onboard the International Space Station. The containers looked like Capri Sun, but they weren’t filled with juice drink. It was water recycled from their urine.The new $154-million water recycling system-which creates a day’s worth of water from urine, sweat, and exhaled air-will reduce the $12 million per year NASA hemorrhages ferrying water to the ISS….

 

Is this a harbinger of things to come? The way things are looking in water starved areas like southern California and other such places, that might just come to pass. How would you feel drinking reclaimed water or cleaned up urine?

Well if you live in Southern California don’t be so sure the water you drink is very pure. According to the article the water we drink from the Colorado River is also reclaimed water. Apparently we get recycled water from a few other states before it reaches here. Did you know that? I don’t know how widely known this is, but if a lot of people knew would people rebel?
