Earthquake Time – One Just Struck
I was sitting in my comfortable reclining chair planning and writing notes regarding some Internet Marketing tasks I need to accomplish. All of a sudden I felt the house swaying. I stood up from the chair and hoped the swaying would stop.
It was strong, but not as strong as a pretty powerful earthquake a couple of months ago was. Nevertheless every time one strikes and rocks the house it causes a very unnerving feeling. What if it is the BIG one predicted to occur anytime?
This one was rather strong, but as earthquakes go not nearly as strong as some. Fortunately it lasted just a few seconds as a strong rolling feeling with the house riding on top of a small wave. Then it seemed to last some twenty or thirty seconds longer as a barely perceptible movement I could feel on the floor.
Our floor, like most of those in Southern California is a concrete slab so the whole house shakes as the ground rumbles underneath it during an earthquake. I mentioned to my wife, who was sitting a few feet away that “watch they will mention it on TV in a couple of seconds”. As I finished the sentence they did announce it on TV.
They said it was a 5.7 on the Richter scale. Pretty strong. Minutes later they revised it to a 5.9. Then two or three minutes they (on TV) revised it for the third time to 5.4 occurring in Borrego Springs.
That’s some 28 miles south of Palm Springs. It’s probably some 70 – 90 miles from my house. Palm Springs is about 50 – 60 miles from my house if one looks on a map. However to get there the normal way requires going around Mt. Jacinto and those mountains so it takes about 90 minutes to get there.
There will be aftershocks with an earthquake of this magnitude. I just hope there will not be one nearly as strong as this tremor. So far, according to the news on TV, there was no damage reported. Let’s hope it stays that way.
